Dentures are removable oral appliances used to replace multiple missing teeth. If you are missing some or all of your teeth, dentures might be just what you need to restore the function, beauty and health of your smile. There are two kinds of dentures: complete dentures and partial dentures.

  • A complete denture is used to replace all of the teeth in a full dental arch. We may suggest a complete denture to replace all of the teeth in one or both arches depending on your individual needs. Our Dentist may suggest using a denture adhesive for improved stability.
  • A partial denture is used if you are missing multiple teeth but have natural teeth remaining. A partial denture often includes a thin framework or clasps that attach to the natural teeth for a secure fit.

Our Dentist may recommend complete or partial dentures to restore your smile if you are missing multiple teeth; dentures can improve your ability to properly speak and eat, restore your natural facial volume, and enhance the overall beauty of your smile. Your dentures will be custom-made to fit your smile comfortably, aesthetically and securely. We invite you to call or visit us soon to learn more about how dentures can improve your smile!

Immediate Dentures

When complete extraction of your teeth is the best solution for your oral health, Dr. Morgan Smith can provide you with immediate dentures to help you avoid the embarrassment of living without your teeth for any amount of time. We invite you to contact Lake City Dental at 801-266-4427 for more information about immediate dentures in Murray, Utah, and to schedule your consultation with our caring dentists.

Preparation for immediate dentures begins before your teeth are extracted. Our dentists take impressions of your existing teeth and gums, which helps us create accurate restorations for you after your original teeth are removed. After your teeth are extracted, our dentists place your immediate dentures, so that you can continue to enjoy a natural looking smile.

In most cases, there is no way to check the fit of your denture prior to the extraction. We may need to make adjustments, or compromise some aesthetic aspects of your appliance to compensate for inadequate space in your mouth or structural concerns. Please also be aware that your appliance will need to be adjusted as your mouth heals and adjusts following the extraction.

Please follow all post-operative instructions after your extraction. We want to ensure that you heal properly, and regular checkups and maintenance appointments allow our dentists to monitor your healing process and help reduce the likelihood of problems.

IMPLANT-RETAINED DENTURES

Dr. Morgan Smith provides implant-retained dentures to replace your missing teeth, giving you all the stability of implants as well as the cost-effectiveness of dentures. For more information about implant-supported dentures in Murray, Utah, and to schedule your consultation with our experienced dentists, please call Lake City Dental today at 801-266-4427

If you are looking for a stable, lasting solution for multiple missing teeth, our Dentist may recommend implant-supported dentures. Implant-retained dentures are very similar in form to traditional dentures; however, they are stabilized by dental implants. Very often, denture wearers complain that dentures become loose and “float” around the mouth, limiting their ability to eat and speak comfortably. Implant dentures are a cost-effective solution, and in many cases, we can even retrofit an existing denture with implants.

The first step in anchoring your denture with dental implants is the placement of the implants. The dental implants, which are similar in appearance to screws, are surgically inserted into the jawbone in order to securely anchor your denture. While the specific number of implants required will depend on your individual needs, most cases require four to six dental implants per denture. Once the implants have been placed and allowed sufficient healing time, your denture is attached on top. Implants provide your denture with exceptional stability. In fact, many patients report that their implant-retained dentures feel and function like their natural teeth.

If you would like more information about implant-supported dentures or wish to schedule your next visit with our Dentist , we welcome you to call or visit our office today.

DENTURE CARE

Taking good care of your dentures is critical to ensuring that your appliance fits and functions properly and in helping you maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. Here are a few recommendations on how to care for your dentures:

  • Remember, only dental professionals are qualified to diagnose problems and make adjustments to your appliance. Do not try to make adjustments on your own.
  • Brush your dentures inside and outside daily. We recommend using a soft, large nylon denture toothbrush with round-ended bristles.
  • Use a denture cream, not toothpaste. Toothpaste is abrasive, and will scratch your appliance.
  • Rinse your dentures with cold water. Do NOT use hot water, as it will case your dentures to warp.
  • Inspect your appliance regularly for worn teeth. Worn or stained dentures will make you look older, and can cause your appliance to function poorly.
  • When not in use, cover your dentures in water or with a denture-cleaning solution to prevent them from drying out.

You should visit our dentists regularly to ensure that your dentures are functioning correctly and that your mouth is healthy. Please make sure that your doctor and dental professionals are aware of all current medications that you are using, as some types of medication can have an effect on your oral health and may impact the fit and function of your appliance.

If your dentures are loose, make an appointment to have them checked immediately. Loose dentures can cause friction and place pressure on your gum and bone tissue, and may cause damage to your mouth.

Most dental insurance policies cover new dentures every 5 years.

Denture Exams & Maintenance

Lake City Dental offers annual denture exams and maintenance to ensure that your appliance fits and functions properly. Your dentures are an investment, and require regular attention in order to provide you with the best results. To make your appointment with Dr. Morgan Smith and learn more about denture exams and maintenance in Murray, Utah, please contact our office at 801-266-4427.

There are several components to dentures exams and maintenance, which encompass both your appliance and your mouth.

Medical and Dental History Update

Our dentists need to be aware of any changes to your medical or dental history. If you are using any medications or have a medical or dental condition, it could affect the fit of your dentures.

Annual Oral Exam

Visiting the dentist regularly is critical to maintaining good oral health. Annual examinations help us detect abnormalities in your mouth, including cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions. Early detection is almost always the key to a successful treatment.

Tissue and Bone Assessment

If your dentures fit poorly, it may cause changes to your bone and tissue. These issues need to be correct as soon as possible for your oral health.

Comfort, Fit, and Integrity of Your Dentures

There are many problems caused by ill-fitting dentures that can and should be correct as quickly as possible, including bite problems, speech impediments, and tissue irritations. Treating these conditions can help you avoid further problems in the future and ensure that your denture functions properly and looks great.

During your appointment, we will also clean and polish your denture and review your oral hygiene.

Denture Relines, Rebase, and Repairs

You will likely need to make several adjustments to your dentures as your mouth adjusts to the appliance, as well as the occasional repair to ensure that your appliance works properly. Dr. Morgan Smith provides denture relines, rebases, and repairs to help you care for your denture properly and enjoy a beautiful smile. To learn more about denture relines, rebasing, and repairs in Murray, Utah, and to make your appointment with our dentists, please contact Lake City Dental at 801-266-4427.

Denture Relines
As time passes, your gum tissues will change and the fit of your denture will become loose. We recommend that you have your dentures professionally relined every 1-2 years to keep your appliance secure in your mouth and functioning properly.

There are several types of denture relines:

  • Hard denture reline – all full dentures should have a hard reline every 2 years. Our dentists remove a layer of plastic from the interior surface, and fill the denture with putty-like material to create an impression. The denture is then sent to the lab and adjusted to the new shape of your gum tissue.
  • Soft denture reline – if you are unable to wear ordinary dentures due to tender gums or sore spots, our dentists can reline your denture with a material that stays pliable for 1-2 years. This material is much less likely to cause soreness or irritation. If this is your situation, you may also want to consider a more permanent solution, such as implant-supported dentures.
  • Temporary relines – If your dentures have not been serviced in some time, our dentists may have difficulty taking impressions for a hard or soft reline. A temporary reline may be recommended to help the inflammation in your mouth to subside. These relines are medicated, and will help your gums return to a more normal state prior so that you can receive a new denture or a soft or hard reline.

Denture Rebase
Denture rebasing is the process of replacing the entire acrylic denture base without replacing the teeth. Our dentists may recommend that your dentures be rebased when the teeth are still in good condition but the denture base material is worn out. Rebases may be required when:

  • The denture is broken or damaged
  • The denture base is weakened
  • You are replacing an immediate denture

Denture Repairs
If your denture is damaged, make an appointment with our dentists immediately. Repairs will restore a broken or damaged denture to a state close to its original condition. Lake City Dental can often repair your dentures in just one day, and we will provide you with information and instruction on how to prevent further damage from occurring.

Soft Denture Liners

If you have a sensitive mouth or your gum tissue has receded or flattened, Dr. Morgan Smith can provide you with soft denture liner to enhance your comfort and improve the fit of your appliance. For more information about soft denture liners in Murray, Utah, and to make your appointment with our dentists, please call Lake City Dental at 801-266-4427.

Soft denture liners are a layer of soft, pliable material. They are fitted between the surface of a denture and your oral tissues to absorb the shock between the hard denture base and your gums. They may also be used when creating new dentures or retrofitting existing dentures. Soft denture liners are a proven dental technology, and have been in use for more than 20 years.

Benefits of soft liners include:

  • Relief and comfort for individuals with receded and flattened gum tissues
  • A solution for patients with chronically sore gum tissues, or who have gums with sharp, bony areas
  • Make it easier to chew
  • Can be used by virtually everyone
  • More comfortable overall

If you receive soft denture liners, you will need to meet with our dentists regularly to ensure that your appliance fits and that you remain in good oral health.
