Does your child feel nervous or anxious during their dental appointments? If so, they’re not alone. Many kids feel the same way, but this doesn’t have to be the case for your child. In fact, there are things you can do to help your child feel more calm, comfortable and relaxed in the dental chair. Our dentists, Dr. Morgan Smith and Dr. Kathryn Cameron, are happy to tell you all about those things, which are:
-Don’t use scary words: Scary words, like pain, shot, surgery etc., can make your child nervous and scared for their appointment. It’s best to avoid those words and use more positive words and phrases, like a safe smile, healthy teeth, strong gums and more, when talking about the appointment.
-Bring comfort items to the appointment: Your child’s favorite teddy bear or blanket might help your child feel comfortable in the dental chair, so bring them! The more they feel at home during their appointment, the better.
-Distract your child during treatment: You can play their favorite music or TV show on your phone, you can tell exciting stories during treatment, and you can even play games with your child. The more you distract them, the less they think about the treatment.
